Erik Freer is a creative lead working across design, technology, research, art, and writing. He develops design systems for brands, institutions, and individuals operating in culture, commerce, luxury, and tech. Currently, he works with the Council on Foreign Relations, teaches at Parsons School of Design, and runs his independent creative practice, Freer Studio.

From 2017–2022, Erik served as Design Director at Neue Galerie New York, Museum for German and Austrian Art, overseeing all creative direction across the museum’s platforms and collaborating closely with curators, artists, and institutional leadership. Previously, he has worked with Yale University, Deep Focus, Prophet, Pentagram, and The Museum of Modern Art.
Through Freer Studio, Erik has led collaborative projects with organizations including Harvard Graduate School of Design, The Brooklyn Rail, New York Review of Architecture, Art Omi, The New Museum, The Hudson Companies, and Housing Works. Publication and book designs by Freer Studio have been published by presses including Primary Information, Wendy’s Subway, Bard Graduate Center, and Haymarket Books.
Erik’s work has received an Emmy nomination, recognition from organizations including The American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Art Directors Club of New York, The One Club for Creativity, the Tokyo Type Directors Club, and The Center for Urban Pedagogy, and has been featured in The New York Times, Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, and The Financial Times.
As an educator, Erik is a term-appointed part-time faculty member at The New School and has also taught at Pratt Institute, The School of Visual Arts, Yale University, Cooper Union, and Syracuse Architecture. He holds an MFA from Yale School of Art, a BFA from Parsons, and a BA from Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts.
