Erik Freer is a creative director, writer, and educator working across culture, architecture, publishing, and technology. He has over fifteen years of experience developing identity systems, publications, campaigns, exhibitions, and environmental design for cultural institutions, academic organizations, and global brands.
From 2017–2022, Erik served as Design Director at Neue Galerie New York, leading creative direction across exhibitions, publications, digital platforms, and public programs in close collaboration with curators, artists, and museum leadership. Previously, he held design roles with Yale University Art Gallery, The Brooklyn Rail, and the Museum of Modern Art, and worked on award-winning advertising campaigns for global brands at Deep Focus.
Through his independent practice, Freer Studio, Erik has partnered with clients including Harvard Graduate School of Design, Yale Law School, Art Omi, Housing Works, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Opera Philadelphia, and New York Review of Architecture. His work has been recognized with an Emmy nomination and featured in The New York Times, Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, and Financial Times.
Erik is a term-appointed part-time professor at The New School. He holds an MFA in Design from the Yale School of Art, a BFA from Parsons School of Design, and a BA from Eugene Lang College.
